Look to Jesus

June 30, 2009

It is ever the Holy Spirit’s work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan’s work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, “Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of His children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus.” All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: He tells us that we are nothing, but that “Christ is all in all.” Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument—it is Christ’s blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by “looking unto Jesus.” Keep thine eye simply on Him; let His death, His sufferings, His merits, His glories, His intercession, be fresh upon thy mind; when thou wakest in the morning look to Him; when thou liest down at night look to Him. Oh! let not thy hopes or fears come between thee and Jesus; follow hard after Him, and He will never fail thee.

“My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness:
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.”

-Charles Spurgeon-

Sacrificial Giving

June 17, 2009

I do not believe one can settle on how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditure excludes them.” – C.S. Lewis

Easter Sunday time change!

April 10, 2009

Hey Love and Justice Church,

I wanted to remind you all of the time change this Sunday.  We will be meeting at 10:30 in the morning instead of 3:00 in the afternoon.  I know this is going to be hard for us because we always do things in the afternoon or evening but I really think we can do it, at least just this once.  haha.

So remember, we are meeting at 10:30 to celebrate our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ who is risen from the dead and seated at the right hand of God the Father.  Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!

Love you

The Sinfulness of Sin

March 11, 2009

Sin is the dare of God’s justice, the rape of his mercy, the jeer of his patience, the slight of his power, the contempt of his love.  We may go on and say, it is the upbraiding of his providence (psalm 50), the scoff of his promise (2 peter 3:3-4), the reproach of his wisdom (isaiah 29:16).  And as is said of the man of sin (i.e. who is made up of sin) it opposes and exalts itself above all that is called God (and above all that God is called), so that it as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing itself as if it were God (2 thes 2:4).

-Ralph Venning, The Sinfulness of Sin, pg. 32-

Oh Love and Justice Church, I pray that we would see our sin in this way, that way we can see how beautiful the cross of Christ is.  When we see how disgusting and filthy our sin is to God, we see the great price that Jesus paid on the cross for us.  Let us get in our minds that in our sin we are enemies and hostile to God, but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Oh I pray that that sinks deep into your heart, while you hated him, wanted nothing to do with him, you weren’t even looking for him, in fact you even opposed him.  It was in that moment that he died for you.  Praise His name for there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Love and Justice

February 12, 2009

Hey Love and Justice Church,

I hope that all is well and I pray that the Lord is teaching your hearts as we continue seeking His grace daily. This Sunday, we will be opening up our bibles to Ephesians (Lord willing) and take a deep look into this incredible book. We will take it verse by verse until we have explored our way through this theological and beautifully Christ-centered forest of a book. I am extremely excited about what the Lord will show us in our studies. There are a couple of things you guys can do to prepare your hearts and minds for this study:

1.) Pray that the Lord would give you a teachable spirit. Ask that the soil of your heart would be good soil to receive the word with meekness, humility, and thankfulness. This will cultivate an attitude of doxology in our hearts as we joyfully hear God’s word.

2.) Read Ephesians 1:1-2. This passage is commonly overlooked for it’s size, but it pacts a lot of rich truth in these few lines. Read and re-read it. This will make our time together more fruitful.

We will be focusing on the very first word in the book – Paul. I am excited, so until then, may the Lord richly bless you with more of His glory shining in and through us. I love you all.

-In Christ

Speak Evil of No One

January 20, 2009

So, there has been a comment recently over the man John Calvin and his manner of life. Now this blog is not to be a defense of Calvin, because frankly I do not care. But I just want us as a Church and as the Body of Christ to learn and grow in Christ through this.

What I would like to say is this: let us grow to love… Let us grow to display the glory of Christ and strive to be conformed to His image. Paul tells Titus in Titus 3:2-3 to remind the church, “… to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray…” While men are not perfect, and there are horrible wicked men out there, we should love and strive to speak evil of no one, whether it is John Calvin or Jacobus Arminius, John Wesley or Charles Spurgeon. Let us guard our tongues. Let us learn from our great Lord Jesus Christ, who was beaten and mocked by evil men yet did not say one word against them. Even Jude warns us not to bring a flippant charge against Satan himself, the evil one… When I look at our Church, I want to see us as loving and respectful men and women whose tongues have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit…
